These medium-voltage soft starters with power electronics have been developed for continuous starting and stopping of three-phase asynchronous motors with squirrel-cage rotors.

The thyristors change the phase angle and start the motor at a reduced voltage. This limits the starting current. The power electronics provide optimum adaptation to the prevailing network conditions and offer optimum protection for the whole drive train.
